Peter has discovered the following interesting piece of information.

The context is that in 1798 Robert Hamilton M.D. wrote a book called "Remarks on Hydrophobia: or the Disease Produced by the Bite of a Mad Dog" and the attachment is page 250.  Apparently there was a tendency to use Hydrophobia incorrectly instead of mania or ‘phrenzy’.  Pope Badham was meant to give an example of the latter!
We are of course assuming that "Pope" in this case was an unusual and rarely used Christian name, rather than a little remembered leader of the Catholic Church!
